DAC Episode 436 - Escape from New York
/We have to give credit to John Carpenter for imagining a future society so fanatically devoted to escape rooms that they turn an entire city into a game (the film was originally called Escape from a Room, but John Carpenter found himself with enough budget leeway to rent the entirety of Ed Koch’s New York City). Of course, things go wrong and the players, trapped in an escape room to fiendishly clever and too lethal to actually escape, turn to lives of crime.
Also, no one has ever looked as cool in an eye patch as Kurt Russell does here. At least that’s what people thought until 1991, when Steven Spielberg added a hook hand and a tricorn to the ensemble, turning Dustin Hoffman into the reigning king of eye patch wearers. Spielberg also introduced a character named Thudbutt to the world of cinema in that same movie. Are there any Thudbutts in the Carpenter oeuvre? Does Escape from New York overcome its Thudbutt problem (a problem that all movies, with the exception of Hook, has been foreced to contend with)?
